The impact of airport master planning on present and future airport development.

It is possible for airports to experience growth and serve as a catalyst for local, regional, and national economies without having to follow a formally adopted master plan. However, airports may be more likely to have this type of economic development impact if they develop and adhere to and periodically modify a master plan. The adoption of and adherence to a master plan by an airport is not an easy process due to the complex constraints that are involved is a significant issue because airports are extremely important sectors of both the national and local economies. The daily activities surrounding an airport, especially in light of the horrific events of September 11, 2001, need to be carried out according to careful planning considerations to ensure the smooth operation and safety of all passengers and employees. Furthermore, airport capital improvements, which spur economic growth and create jobs, are more likely to be completed on schedule and on or under budget when an airport master plan which includes guidelines, work plans, timelines, etc. is followed.; The desired outcome of this thesis is intended to show that the process involving the creation and adoption of an airport master planning process is a complex, time consuming, and expensive, but one that is helpful in enabling airports to achieve orderly and efficient development, manage growth effectively, and address emerging issues that ultimately impact local, regional, and national economies.
