Reverend James Pierpont: New Haven and the founding of Yale, 1659--1714 (Connecticut).

Rev. James Pierpont was an influential man who made many long term contributions to early New Haven society. Pierpont set in motion the original proposal for the Collegiate School, later renamed Yale University, and encouraged the movement of the college to its final location from Saybrook, CT to New Haven, CT. The areas of Rev. Pierpont's religious influence include the First Church and the creation of the Saybrook Platform. Rev. Pierpont was a leading member of the synod that created the platform and an article said to be written by him became a major part of the written doctrine itself. This thesis will present a narrative of this clergyman's life, his multiple contributions to the institutions of religion and education in Connecticut.
