摘要

This study assessed the current location, condition, and use of deer wintering areas (DWAs) in New Hampshire and models used to predict suitable DWA were developed and ground-truthed. Additionally, the relative amount and location of supplemental feeding and its potential influence on winter habitat use was also investigated using stable isotope analysis of fecal pellets. Modelled DWAs did not differ from known DWAs in key measures of vegetative structure and topography, and consequently may serve as tool for conservation and population management purposes. Supplemental feeding levels differed regionally, and the relative influence of traditional DWA variables as predictors of use was inversely related to estimated feeding levels. Successful management of deer will require continued monitoring and conservation DWAs, and in particular, may benefit from ongoing research investigating the relationship between supplemental feed use and the fate of traditional DWAs.
