The Relationship Between Parenting Styles and Humor Style Characteristics.

This study examined the relationship between parental style and humor style. Participating parents (N=174) completed the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1991), based on Baumrind's (1966) three parental-style prototypes, and the Humor Styles Questionnaire (Martin, Puhlik-Doris, Larsen, Gray, & Weir, 2003), which classifies humor according to four styles. Among the 12 proposed parenting-humor relationships, seven significant correlations ( r=.171 to .449) were found. Authoritarian parenting correlated positively with aggressive humor. Authoritative parenting correlated positively with affiliative and self-enhancing humor, and negatively with self-defeating humor. Permissive parenting correlated positively with self-defeating humor. Two additional correlations were found among men only. Post-hoc analyses found significant mean sum differences in parenting and humor style scores according to gender, age, income, education, and relationship status.
