This researcher analyzes the rise of industrialization and modernization in Italy, beginning with those events at the end of the nineteenth century that initiated a process of ongoing transformation. This investigator concentrates on those aspects that had a greater impact on the economic and social transformation of an ancient civilization that had influenced the history and development of the world of its time.; During a period of economic transformation of Western society, Italy found itself having to solve its own political dislocation and unite into one Republic, devising a system for economic development that completely transformed a basically artisan and agrarian society into an industrialized nation. Italy has reached a level of economic development that, often, is difficult for an outsider to understand, considering the bureaucratic intricacies and apparent volatility of its political system. However, what may appear to be a precarious system is instead built on strong foundations, having at the heart job and social security benefits.; This socialist-democratic system considers the industrial apparatus to be also at the service of the workers and must be used to better their conditions. Consequently, the labor and political structures are often intertwined into a conflict with labor demands frequently taking precedence over the economic and political goals of industrialists. Because of this reality, Italy, with its dualistic industrial organization, is slower in accepting and implementing reforms that would turn its economy into a totally private system. However, the nation has embraced an open market policy to spur competition, which leads to privatization to survive in an age of globalization. In the end, privatization in Italy will be all'italiana (Italian style), resulting in a marriage of convenience between social benefits and economic demands.; A syllabus for an undergraduate level college course based on this research was created because the industrialization and modernization of Italy are relevant topics that epitomize the complex metamorphosis of a late industrializer in transforming its economy to improve not only the conditions of its people, but also to place it in an harmonized system of the global market.
