Middle management within a department of corrections in a South Atlantic state: An evaluation of management precursors to chief counselor burnout.

This research was conducted to discover the perceptions, attitudes, and burnout experiences of Chief Counselors employed with a department of corrections in a South Atlantic state. This research was conducted in two phases. The finding from Phase 1, based on the result from the MBI-HSS, showed Chief Counselors had low, average, and high burnout experiences. Some of the findings of Phase 2, which was based on10 researcher-designed interview questions, showed Chief Counselors perceive their role within a correctional facility as being vital and essential, but they feel overwhelmed and devalued. Also, the findings revealed that Chief Counselor do not want to be involved in the inmate's grievance process as the Grievance Coordinator because it creates conflict with staff, but they think they can influence the resolution of the inmate's grievance if the inmate is willing to resolve the issue. Future research could be conducted to determine whether a relationship exists between the perceptions and attitudes of Chief Counselors and the classification of the prison.
