The association of depressive symptoms with subclinical cardiovascular risk factors and antihypertensive medications in an elderly population: The Cardiovascular Health Study.

Objective. To examine the relationship between depressive symptoms with antihypertensive medications and subclinical cardiovascular indicators namely, carotid artery intima media thickness (CIMT) and corrected QT interval (QTc).;Methods The study sample consisted of 65 years and older participants in the Cardiovascular Health Study (1989-1992). Measurements included traditional risk factors such as blood pressure and lipids as well as measures of subclinical disease, including electrocardiography of the heart and carotid ultrasound.;Statistical Analysis Logistic regression, linear regression, and GEE were conducted to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms with antihypertension medications and subclinical cardiovascular indicators (CIMT) and (QTc).;Results Results indicated that depressive symptoms were associated with antihypertensive medication intake, CIMT and QTc.;Conclusions. The findings suggest that depressive symptoms are associated with antihypertension medications, cardiac arrhythmias and atherosclerosis.
