A battlefield preservation plan for Champion Hill (Mississippi).

The benefits of Civil War battlefield preservation are conclusively established in this thesis. Preserved battlefields have positive economic impacts through increased tourism, and require lower infrastructure investment compared to other potential land uses. Battlefields provide educational opportunities, help preserve our national heritage, and conserve natural resources.; This thesis drafted a battlefield preservation plan for one of this nation's most significant battlefields---Champion Hill, Mississippi. Historians recognize Champion Hill, fought on May 16, 1863, as the decisive battle of the Vicksburg Campaign. Champion Hill faces threats from residential development, neglect, and local apathy. This plan creates a long-range vision for preservation of Champion Hill while focusing on specific and short-term measures. This study employed GIS technology as a tool for gathering, recording, and analyzing important site data based on McHarg (1969), Hopkins (1977), and Drummond (1998). This study concludes with eleven recommendations for the preservation of the Champion Hill Battlefield area.
