Patient safety: Benefits of collaborating e-prescribing and electronic health records.

Electronic health records and electronic prescribing are two of the most important tools needed to achieve the ultimate goal of providing the best patient care. Collaboration of these tools allows both patients and healthcare providers with the opportunity to significantly improve healthcare. Health information technology provides clinicians with accurate and complete information about a patient's health, reduction of paperwork for patients and physicians, and an overall healthier nation. The information contained in this document explains how the collaboration of electronic health records and electronic prescribing improves the quality of healthcare. Before healthcare providers implement electronic health records and electronic prescribing software, they must be familiar with the advantages, disadvantages, costs, and functionalities associated with its adoption. The information contained in this paper is directed and beneficial for healthcare providers that are interested in implementing electronic health records and electronic prescribing. A brochure and an E-prescribing vendor questionnaire were designed to further educate healthcare providers on the adoption of electronic health records and electronic prescribing. Completion of the E-prescribing vendor questionnaire helps healthcare providers collect information from E-prescribing vendors to meet the needs of the practice and meaningful use standards of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs. Both of these documents will help establish what is needed to successfully implement these tools, improve patient safety, and improve the delivery of healthcare.
