'Effi Briest' versus 'Fontane Effi Briest': Intermediale Aspekte einer erzaehltheoretischen Analyse.

This thesis discusses certain intermedial aspects of narratology involving literary and cinematographic discourse by means of a comparative examination of Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Fontane Effi Briest. Employing some of the most useful tools at the disposal of narratological criticism, the thesis will undertake an investigation of the particular ways in which the same story events are differently presented in literary and cinematographic discourse. It has thus as its central goal the exploration of the reach of narratology by means of a comparative intermedial analysis of these two very well-known treatments of a single story.;The story of Effi Briest was chosen not only for the intrinsic literary value of Theodor Fontane's presentation of the narrative but also for the extraordinary degree of fidelity with which Rainer Werner Fassbinder reshapes both Effi's story and Fontane's narrative, thus affording numerous opportunities for comparative narratological examination.
