The story of the House of Tomorrow and its interior, significantly redesigned for the Century of Progress's extended season in 1934, is a story of collaboration and competing visions of architects George Fred Keck and Leland Atwood, the Howell furniture company in Geneva, Illinois, the Chicago decorators Irene Kay Hyman and Mabel Schamberg, and designers Marianne Willisch, Wolfgang Hoffmann, and Gilbert Rohde. But Keck's collaboration with Willisch and Howell's with Hoffmann was not a simple matter of European influence on American design sensibility. Chicago area architects, designers, and manufacturers, with contributions from their European colleagues, created a complex and contradictory expression of modernity heightened by the spectacle of diverse architecture on display at the Century of Progress. 1933 marked a radical, experimental, and even strange architectural moment with simultaneous manifestations of modernity that predated the arrival of Bauhaus architects in the United States, and which were specific to Chicago.
