摘要

This dissertation examines the many dimensions of contemporary women's narrative that challenge the traditional political and literary discourses shaping Caribbean cultural identity since independence. Throughout the twentieth century, these discourses have generally been founded in the notions of cultural syncretism and the overcoming of the legacies of colonialism. However, in recent decades these homogenizing and harmonious notions of identity are subverted and de-authorized in Caribbean women's literature. In their narrative works, these authors highlight the presence of the legacies of plantation society (social and economic relations determined by racism, classism and sexism) that continue to mould urban environments, domestic space and family dynamics, as well as the individual psyche of female protagonists. These themes are explored through a comparative analysis of some of the narrative works of the following French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean women: Mayra Santos-Febres, Olga Nolla, Ligia Minaya Belliard, Iris Davila, Marta Rojas, Maryse Conde and Myriam Warner-Vieyra.
