The California freeway system is the dominant landscape feature in a state once envisioned as paradise. An analysis of ideas pertaining to the artistic, social, and environmental impact of the freeway is presented in this project.; The paper is divided conceptually into two themes. The first theme discusses what it means to search for paradise in an attempt to discover the underlying ideological views that support the building of an extensive freeway system. The second theme revolves around the idea that California has gone through a transformation from Paradise to Paradise Lost. The freeway system is considered as a monumental art form and as a destructive phenomenon.; The art project that accompanies the paper provides visual imagery reflective of the themes in the paper.
