With theoretical guidance from Value Expectant Theory, the Cox's Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior (IMCHB), and Ware, Snyder, and Wright's Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ III), the present study examined relationships between healthcare satisfaction and preventative healthcare utilization among Black and White retirees of an organized labor unit. Data were compared to the longitudinal Medical Outcomes Study. Measurements for utilization were based on annual examinations by a healthcare professional for cardiovascular related diseases and prostate/mammogram screenings. Black retirees reported lower overall satisfaction and less trust in the technical competencies of providers compared to White retirees. They also reported higher utilization for annual cholesterol and blood pressure checks performed by healthcare professionals. Overall, both Black and White retirees in this study reported lower satisfaction with healthcare than satisfaction measurements reported in the Medical Outcomes Study. The current study did not demonstrate a significant difference between Black male and female retirees for healthcare satisfaction or utilization.
