This dissertation studies the design and performance of optical CDMA (OCDMA) systems and subsystems for flexible bandwidth allocation within access networks: a large part of this work is devoted to experimentally demonstrate and analyze how OCDMA can fit into future generations of optical networks. While both coherent and incoherent OCDMA are introduced, this work focuses on a sub category of the latter, namely 2 dimensional wavelength-hopping time-spreading (2D WHTS).; This dissertation starts from the basics common to all 2D WHTS incoherent OCDMA systems: the code space design and the allocation of resources between both time and wavelength dimensions constraint to specific performance goals and physical parameters. We also investigate how the modulation format can affect performance and how to chose the best format depending on the network metrics. From there, we present multiple proof of principle demonstrations to highlight weaknesses and strengths. A temporal 1D network is first presented along with its limitations which leads to the investigation of 2D systems. In this section, both OOK and PPM modulation formats are demonstrated.; The last sections focus on looking towards future applications of incoherent OCDMA in access networks. Subsystems, required to allow compatibility of OCDMA on current network architectures such as ring, bus or mesh, are designed and demonstrated. Finally, Chapter 7 attempts to combine all the information and knowledge acquired throughout this thesis to assess the performance of OCDMA lightwave network through means of simulations.
