'Chief integration officer': A study of success factors in the implementation of clinical information technology.

This research examines the question "what do participants in successful information technology (IT) implementations perceive were the factors that enabled success with these IT initiatives?" Using grounded theory methodology the researcher conducted interviews with chief executives, information technology leaders, and medical informatics leaders from healthcare organizations that received industry recognition for their success with information technology. The researcher developed a theoretical framework of factors that contribute to successful clinical information systems implementation. The interview results led to formulation of a proposed two-part theoretical framework to answer the research question. This theoretical framework emphasizes the critical role of leadership in success, and the importance of integrating operational strategies and information technology strategies.
