Determinants of industry R&D funding at United States research universities.

I explore the influence that market structure and licensing policies have on the levels of industry-financed university R&D expenditures. By varying the market structure and licensing policies, I find that although individual firm levels of industry-financed university R&D expenditures decrease with competition, they increase in aggregate. Additionally, I find that the use of exclusive licenses may lead to monopoly power in the final goods market. I further investigate the correlations of university output and patent licensing policies with the levels of industry-financed university R&D expenditures. The empirical results reveal the technology classes that may attract higher levels of industry financing of university R&D. This research sheds light on the characteristics of research universities and industries that may encourage university-industry technology transfer and aid in the formulation of university technology licensing policies. Lastly I explore the complex world of university-industry technology transfer, focusing on research output in the form of intellectual property and graduate students. The inherent differences in the characteristics of technology dictate the strength of intellectual property rights across technology classes. I investigate these difference and the policies surrounding the intellectual property and how they may influence which industries fund university R&D and engage in university-industry technology transfer.
