摘要

This study explored barriers in society that stifle the reentry process for ex-offenders and are believed to contribute to recidivism. A total of 13 African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian parolees were interviewed. The interview guide addressed three categories of barriers which included, (1) legislation, (2) support systems, and (3) community-based resources. The data were analyzed by grouping participants' responses and recording themes and patterns.;The results of the study indicated that poverty, substance abuse, and the stigma attached to ex-offenders are the most commonly encountered barriers to reentry. Additionally, the experiences that offenders have while incarcerated often results in negative psychological effects, making reentry for offenders who have substance abuse problems increasingly difficult. There were no gender differences in perceived barriers. However, men were more likely than women to find employment upon release from jail or prison.
