Racial perception and perceived competence in helping situations .

The roles of racial stereotyping and prejudice in judgments of the recipients of help were investigated to determine how individuals in helping situations are viewed. Two experiments were conducted to examine the roles of racial stereotyping and prejudice in judgments of the recipients of help. Tufts University undergraduates were used in these experiments. The results suggest that there was a significant difference in how we perceive Whites and Blacks in helping situations; specifically that we perceived Blacks who needed help more negatively. Additionally, the distinctions between Helping situations and non Helping situations are disambiguated.
