An exploratory study of beginner commuter cyclists in Markham and Richmond Hill Ontario.

This exploratory study examines the experience of beginner commuter cyclists. A group of commuters were offered a cycling program to support their transition to become beginner commuter cyclists. Participants were offered a start-up package, a route planning session and an on-bike safety training session. Some participants completed a two-week trial and reflected on their daily commutes in a journal. Following the trial, the participants shared their experience in a follow-up interview discussing their experience as a beginner commuter cyclist. The study also looked at baseline and follow-up surveys to assess the changes in attitude from before the study period to after. This research aimed to understand the experience of beginner commuter cyclists as a way to find methods to communicate cycling as a viable option of commuting in York Region. This research project will help municipalities, workplaces and Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) understand the experience of beginner commuter cyclists as they transition to regular commuters cyclists.
