Applications of Spectroscopy to Enological, Diabolical, and Theoretical Problems.

This dissertation is separated into two primary parts. Part I concentrates on two areas of non-invasive wine research: the detection of a cork born spoilage component, 2,4,6-trichroloanisole, by coupling low pressure pre-concentration with GC/MS and the authentication of wine using electric and magnetic susceptibility coupled with principal component analysis. Part II surveys two unrelated topics in NMR spectroscopy: the feasibility of using low field NMR to screen solid consumable containers for contaminants and the application of the Dirac, Frenkel, McLachlan, Heller time dependent variation of parameters to time dependent NMR problems for the first time.
