Elements of style in French Baroque guitar music: A survey of the printed sources 1663--1705, with transcriptions and analyses of selected works.

This work is written for the purpose of increasing the understanding of the guitar and its repertoire in France during the Baroque era. It contains a descriptive survey of the books of tablature published for the guitar in France between 1663 and 1705, with transcriptions and analyses of selected works from each of the composers represented in these works. The composers discussed are Francois Martin, Antoine Carre, Francesco Corbetta, Remy Medard, Henry Grenerin, Robert de Visee, and Francois Campion. Biographical details and other pertinent facts about these seven composers; information of historical and cultural interest as they pertain to the guitar; and general observations about the compositional style of French guitar composers of the Baroque era are included. This study also provides a means through which a guitarist may approach the issues concerning the performance of this literature.
