Jean Jaures (1859-1914) linked a liberal theory of justice and a socialist theory of practice. Through two doctoral theses and a study of French history, he sought to synthesize idealist and materialist philosophies and establish a liberal lineage for the idea of socialism. Through his involvement in the Dreyfus Affair and the socialist movement's debates about reformism, he proposed a radical reformist politics in which the labor movement would strive to enact liberal principles. Socialism, for Jaures, became a regulative ideal rather than an institutional expectation. In his final years, he struggled to reconcile cosmopolitanism and patriotism, arguing that immediate attachments could serve as a training-ground for broader humanistic solidarities.;Jaures's liberal socialist theory of radical reform speaks to contemporary debates about the liberal tradition and the idea of radical democracy.
