Survey of special education teachers' preparedness to train and supervise paraprofessionals.

摘要

This study surveyed special education teachers in East Central South Dakota about their preparedness to train and supervise paraprofessionals in special education programs. The study is a replication of Dr. Nancy K. French's survey research titled "Supervising Paraprofessionals: A Survey of Teacher Practices," published in the 2001 issue of The Journal of Special Education.;The findings show the 54 teachers surveyed supervise paraprofessionals to a great extent while not having extensive professional training in the supervision of paraprofessionals, have little influence in hiring practices of paraprofessionals, and share many tasks with their paraprofessionals such as clerical duties, lesson delivery, and supervisory duties. Overall, the study also shows teachers in East Central South Dakota are highly satisfied with the assistance and performance of paraprofessionals under their supervision. This research project will benefit teachers and administrators responsible for working with, training, and supervising paraprofessionals.
