Landslides and debris flows have been observed to be initiated from rainfall as the increase in pore water pressure (PWP) reduces the available shear strength within a slope. The parameters which may affect slope stability include storm intensity, antecedent moisture, and geologic formation. This thesis analyzes and compares these parameters in a transient, two-dimensional finite-element seepage simulation to determine which parameters have the most significant affect on PWP development. Numerical issues associated with these highly non-linear analyses were also investigated. The time-step (time discretization) and finite-element mesh size (space discretization) for a pre-existing transient analysis were selected based on the shape of the PWP profile in the soil and computing time.
