In 1995 one of the top flute-making companies in the United States, Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, Inc., introduced the Brannen-Cooper Kingma System flute ("Kingma flute") to the public. Compared with the traditional Boehm System flute ("Boehm flute"), the mechanism of the Kingma flute was drastically modified. As a result, in addition to functioning as a regular Boehm flute, the mechanical modifications of the Kingma flute enabled players to produce a complete quartertone scale with consistent sonority through all registers without making major pitch corrections or employing alternate fingerings and cross fingerings. However, most impressive is its capability to produce sequential sets of multiphonics that do not exist on the Boehm flute.;Surprisingly, no scholarly information is currently available about the application of the Kingma flute. Those who wish to adopt the instrument for composition or performance today will doubtlessly be discouraged since there is no detailed information on the Kingma flute's sonic capabilities. This study will undertake a systematic approach in researching and codifying a catalogue of the Kingma flute's sonic capabilities. Based on the above findings, this study will then provide a conceptual scheme for organizing and classifying the flute's multiphonic universe in general and, ultimately, a multiphonic database will be developed to serve as a general reference source for the Kingma flute and as a new resource for composers and performers.
