The design of an interactive multimedia application for the Redpath Museum mummy exhibit.

The Redpath Museum of McGill University exhibits many artifacts from the Egyptian area, including several mummies. The exhibit features an interactive application that presents the CT scan images of a New Kingdom male mummy in its collection. After ten years of operation, the hardware has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. In addition, the museum wants to extend the application to include new content. This thesis presents the research that went into the design and implementation of the new interactive application for the Redpath Museum's mummy exhibit.;The final application has been tested on various operating systems and hardware platforms.;The new application is implemented using Adobe's Flash technology, which makes it platform independent. This gives the museum the most flexibility to find hardware to run the program on. This requirement was of major importance, since the museum runs on a very low budget, and ideally wants to run the application on donated hardware. The content of the application has been enriched intensively by adding six carefully chosen topics. Copyright research has been conducted to avoid copyright infringement of newly injected content. Based on our research, we acquired the permissions from all the parties whose content is used in the new application. Finally, the application has been designed to be very user friendly, i.e. the information is easy to understand and access, and the navigation is well structured and intuitive. We limited the amount of information available for each topic to a certain amount that takes in to consideration the time constraint of a normal visit a person may pay to the museum.
