Assessing self-awareness of inexperienced and experienced athletic coaches: A mixed method approach.

Much of the previous research on coaching behavior has either quantitatively measured the types and frequencies of coaching performance or has qualitatively assessed coaching conduct, with limited attention given to mixed method approaches to evaluating coaching actions. The current study used a tool which qualitatively assessed and then quantitatively prioritized behaviors that were important to the coaches to investigate if the construct of self-awareness varied between less experienced and more experienced coaches working at a college-sponsored developmental residential summer basketball camp for boys. Comparison of coaches' and athletes' perceptions of coaching conduct revealed high levels of agreement between coaches and their athletes. Improved coaching self-awareness may lead to a decrease in ineffective coaching behaviors; better coach-athlete relationships; and reduced youth sport attrition. Results from this study may be used to assist coaches in developing skills to increase self-awareness of their conduct which may lead to a healthier athletic environment.
