Job satisfaction between cytotechnologists in private laboratories and hospital based laboratories: A comparative analysis

This study examines job satisfaction among cytotechnologists who are members of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and are working in the Northeast region of the United States in either a private laboratory or a hospital. Hertzberg's (1959) theory of job satisfaction formed the conceptual framework for this exploratory study. Two hundred people, randomly selected from the American Society of Cytotechnologists (ASCT) membership mailing list, were sent a questionnaire and a cover letter with a return useable rate of (116) 58%. The survey questionnaire contained questions based on Hertzberg's (1959) theory. The returned questionnaires were analyzed for specific job satisfaction variables. Statistical analysis was completed using descriptive statistics. The result from the mean scores indicated that cytotechnologists in both settings were satisfied. The result of the T-Test showed that hospital laboratory cytotechnologists have higher satisfaction level than cytotechnologists in a private laboratory. The results of the Chi-square analysis showed that hospital and private laboratory cytotechnologists have the same distribution of age, marital status, education, income and employment status. However, gender distribution is not the same in hospital and private laboratory settings.
