Alaskan offshore icebreaker design.

With oil production continuing and expanding into Alaska's waters, there is a need for a vessel to support operations and the ability to respond to emergencies. This paper illustrates a mission-based design that analyzes vessel purpose, endurance, and environmental parameters in order to establish a mission profile. This mission profile can be used to deliver specific requirements for the ship. Once the requirements are set, a basic ship design can be begun which cycles through the concept and preliminary design. This design looks at current icebreaking concepts, uses engineering tools to develop ice resistance, and basic hull design software to find open water powering estimates. Lines drawings, general arrangements, and curves of area are also delivered. Since this is a novel boat design for Alaska, new oil response ideas can be brought on board.
