Crisis negotiations: An evaluation of perceived characteristics that facilitate the successful conclusion of crisis situations.

This study examined the influence of education, training, and experience as perceived factors affecting the outcome of crisis negotiation situations from a quantitative and qualitative perspective. In the quantitative analysis (N=51), survey data was collected through the Texas Law Enforcement Management and Statistics Program. A logistics regression analysis was conducted on the responses of the 51 agencies that replied to the survey. A factor analysis was conducted to ensure that the responses by each agency helped to draw out the important aspects of the successful crisis negotiations.;In the qualitative analysis, eight (N=8) face-to-face interviews were conducted with crisis negotiators within police agencies throughout the state of Texas. The agencies varied in size and jurisdictional population. Data was collected regarding their perceptions of factors affecting crisis negotiation outcomes and defining successful crisis negotiations. Most negotiators demonstrated very similar thoughts on how they believe that the outcome was ranked regarding a successful situation. It was shown negotiators and their teams were split about the importance of education and its overall affect on the negotiations process, but were united in the idea that experience and training were vital components to the successful conclusion of a crisis negotiation incident.;KEY WORDS: Crisis Negotiation, Education, Training, Experience.
