Intergenerational relationships: A correlational study of quality and quantity of grandparent/grandchild interactions to grandparents' perceived happiness.

The purpose of this correlative study was to determine if there is a positive correlation between adults who labeled themselves as grandparents and their perceived happiness, as assessed by the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, and various aspects of their interaction with their grandchildren. Geographic proximity of the grandparent's home and the grandchild's home was assessed, along with the frequency, and type of relationship between the two. Eighty two volunteers from the surrounding area of Omaha, Nebraska completed the survey via mail. There were 30 male and 52 female participants. The participants of this survey were volunteers aged between 41 and 81 years old. Using the summed score of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, it was found that there were no significant relationships between the number of grandchildren, time spent with the grandchildren, geographic proximity between the grandparent and grandchild, and the role of the grandparent to the perceived happiness score of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire.
