The 'Melodies' of Jacques Ibert: A survey and performer's guide to thirteen selected songs for voice with piano accompaniment.

Jacques Ibert (1890--1962), whose reputation as a composer rests primarily on his symphonic pieces, film music, and works for a variety of wind instruments, composed a number of solo vocal pieces, some of which were extracted from larger dramatic and lyric works. The thirteen songs of this study were conceived as true melodies, and are organized into four sets entitled Deux Chansons, Opus 3 (1910), Trois Chansons de Charles Vildrac , Opus 17 (1921), La Verdure doree, Opus 21 (1923), and Quatre Chants, Opus 32 (1927).;The study provides biographical information on Ibert, in particular as it relates to his interest in singing, and musical analysis of the thirteen melodies. The study shows an evolution of his musical style in writing for the solo voice and piano during of the seventeen years of composing these melodies. In consultation with Alexandra Laederich's work, Catalogue de l'OEuvres de Jacques Ibert (1890--1962), dates, locations, and circumstances of the compositions and their first performances are detailed. Brief information on the poets of the texts of the thirteen melodies is given, along with English translations of the poetry, and suggestions for performance and interpretation of the melodies.
