This thesis presents the studies of nonlinear optical properties and radiative lifetimes of Mn-doped ZnSe d-dots grown by nucleation-doping. The measured results support a multi-layer MnSe/Zn1- xMnxSe/ZnSe atructure for the Mn ion-doped d-dots. The enhancement fluorescence intermittency from single Mn-doped ZnSe d-dots has been observed and can be attributed to the ion-ion interactions within each d-dot. These studies can be very important for the potential applications of such newly-developed d-dots in opto-etectronic and biomedical applications. Also, linear and nonlinear refractive indices of hybrid composites of CR-39 matrices with embedded CdSe nanocrystals have been measured. Such materials can be used for optical color filters.
