摘要

The thesis is concerned with the representation of madness in pre-expressionist and expressionist works of art and literature which use unconventional imagery and style to reveal the continually developing problem of the disintegration of values. A new art form only comes into being with the madman as hero, and preserves its irrational content in a rational form. In Adorno's words: "Art is rationality that criticizes rationality without departing from it." The increasing attraction of the madness motif among pre-expressionist authors culminates in the works of the expressionist period and manifests itself in the dissolution of the world order as well as in the destruction of the concept of personality.
