An exploration of the life experiences of the survivors of China's Cultural Revolution.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the life experiences of 12 men and women who lived in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the Southern and Western regions of the United States. The themes from the interviews were grouped into three major categories, including the culture of fear, changes in values, and coping with the Cultural Revolution. The general categories from the interviews suggest that the traditional Chinese views of the community and human nature changed as a result of the Cultural Revolution. The traditional Chinese values of family and education were retained and served important coping functions both during and following the Cultural Revolution for those interviewed. The study concluded with recommendations for providing mental health services for Chinese immigrants who lived through the Cultural Revolution and for conducting future research.
