Three alkylammonium formate ionic liquids (ILs) [ethylammonium formate (EAF), propylammonium formate (PAF) and butylammonium formate (BAF)] have been studied as alternative solvents with fluorescence detection.; The fluorescence spectra of naproxen, riboflavin and epinephrine in water and these ILs have been compared. Although there is decreased fluorescence intensity in the ILs, there is no wavelength shift and fluorescence spectra are still resolved.; Using a monolithic column, naproxen and tryptophan are separated using a MeOH-water or EAF-water mobile phase. The mobile phase containing EAF shows improved peak symmetry and efficiency, although solvent strength for MeOH is 3.3, but is only 2.2 for EAF. Riboflavin and 9-methyacridine as well as a combination of indoles were separated using EAF as a mobile phase modifier.; Finally, these ILs were studied as enzyme diluents for cytochrome C and bovine serum albumin. Results showed that these ILs are less denaturing to these enzymes than common organic solvents.
