Chorionic villus sampling at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, 2000--2006: A pilot study.

Recent guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommend offering invasive prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities to all pregnant women, regardless of age. Second trimester amniocentesis has been the standard of care, with chorionic villas sampling (CVS) slower to follow due to concerns about safety and accuracy. However whether, and to what degree, a difference in accuracy or safety exists between these procedures is unclear. To help inform this debate, we designed a large, retrospective study to estimate the difference in pregnancy loss due to CVS compared with non-invasive NT screening at the Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) from 2000-2006. In this report, we describe preliminary data from the first 109 patients carrying singleton pregnancies and undergoing CVS, and make recommendations for moving the study forward.
