Self consolidating concrete is becoming more highly used in civil engineering projects, due to its unique ability to be poured into heavily reinforced structural elements without the need for vibration. This study focuses on the use of lightweight aggregate in self consolidating concrete (LSCC). The effects of lightweight aggregate on the plastic properties of the concrete are investigated and compared to normal weight SCC, by standard SCC testing procedures. LSCC hardened properties are investigated through compression and flexural testing. Durability of LSCC exposed to fire, is tested and the residual strengths after fire exposure are reported. Finally a design procedure is recommended for LSCC that considers paste rheology, aggregate spacing, and the effects of frictional resistance contributed by the aggregates. A test procedure is introduced to provided a relative measurement of the frictional resistance contributed by different types of aggregate. This study shows that lightweight aggregate can be successfully used in self consolidating concrete, which results in a concrete with both advantages and disadvantages when compared to standard SCC.
