Nowadays, there is a growing tendency in the area of media home entertainment. Personal area networks (PANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard or Bluetooth are becoming more and more popular. The advantages of minimal infrastructure and low cost make them a good choice for media home network. Location-aware mobile media is an application area that provides a big potential business, since the users of mobile devices want to access media data and location-aware services dynamically from their devices.;This thesis describes the design and implementation of a location-aware media system that provides accurate media data control from a mobile device. The system consists of some Bluetooth adaptors that are attached to various media devices in a room. Each media device periodically transmits its location information through its RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value which indicates the signal strength from the media device. The central server listens to signal strength transmissions and measures distances from each media device to the user. Then it uses these distances to compute their location and determines which media device is the nearest device to the user. The significant part of our system design is to make our system achieve accurate distance measurements between a mobile device and media devices before wireless connections are established. The parameter used to evaluate location information is signal strength. Our system offers meter-level location discovery for the mobile device and does not require any extra hardware on top of the existing network infrastructure.
