This thesis is concerned with ways in which the Jamaican past is constructed. Specifically, this analysis intends to examine the nature of history and heritage as they are incorporated into tourism planning and development with recognition for embedded issues of preservation and management. Using a selection of sites---historical, virtual, and discursive---cultural heritage will be explored as it is interpreted and produced for marketability in the heritage industry. The approach will, by necessity, engage with discipline-straddling philosophies surrounding heritage and tourism as independent processes and as intersecting practices. The constituencies for whom these pasts are produced will be considered as well as the extent to which these representations are negotiated among stakeholders in local, national, even international histories.
