“忠实”与“变通”——试析《儒林外史》中春秋笔法的翻译

摘要

《儒林外史》是中国古典讽刺文学的杰作，饱含中国的文学精髓和中国文化，具有极高的思想和学术价值。春秋笔法的成功运用是这部著作成功的重要因素之一。春秋笔法这一史学叙事方法和写作手法，在我国文学史上有着悠久的历史和深远的影响，可见于中国文学史上很多有倾向性的作品中。同时，也广泛地应用于社会生活的各个层面。可以毫不夸张地说，如果不了解春秋笔法，将无法理解很多中国文学作品以及中国的文化和社会现象。因此，在《儒林外史》的翻译中，如何有效地翻译其中所使用的春秋笔法应引起译者的广泛关注。 长期以来，诸多国内外学者针对翻译的标准各抒己见。然而，不论提法如何，都离不开“信”即“忠实”。“从历史的角度看，译家关注的基本问题从古有之，例如翻译的忠实性问题，是伴随着翻译史的发展而不断提出的，任何译家都无法回避。”(许钧1998:2)传统的忠实标准以原文为导向，强调理想的“等值”。然而，翻译研究的深入和发展使得翻译的“忠实”标准在不断地演变－从传统的以原文为导向的“忠实”标准，到以目标语读者、翻译目的等为导向的“忠实”标准。文学翻译作为翻译的一个分支，对一个国家的文学和文化传播有着重要的影响。此外，文学翻译有其独特的特点，即创作性。因此，文学翻译中更应注重“忠实”的标准问题。然而，由于自身的局限性，传统的“忠实”标准无法很好地指导文学翻译。“‘以不变应万变，以万变求不变，统而不死，活而不乱’这是翻译辩证法的灵魂。”(张泽乾1998:467)因此，本文以辩证法为理论基础，阐述了文学翻译中译者所遵循的“忠实”原则不应是传统的、绝对化的一元标准，而应是动态的二元准则－“忠实”与“变通”，即在翻译的过程中，在坚持以原文为导向的同时，还需考虑目标语读者及目标语文化以及翻译目的等诸多因素，在坚持忠实原则的同时持有变通的思想，并适时采取变通的手段，从而实现最佳的翻译。 本文尝试从一个新的视角来探讨《儒林外史》的翻译，即研究其作者所使用的春秋笔法的翻译。回顾了翻译的“忠实”标准，论述了文学翻译中的“忠实”与“变通”，并结合具体实例分析了《儒林外史》英译本中春秋笔法的翻译，理论联系实际地阐述了“忠实”与“变通”准则在《儒林外史》春秋笔法的翻译中的重要性和有效性，以期为文学作品中春秋笔法的翻译抛砖引玉。
