翻译适应选择观照下的辜鸿铭儒经英译

摘要

辜鸿铭是清末民初的著名文化学者和翻译家。他留学西方十多年，对西方文化有着颇为系统而深刻的认识，回国以后服膺于中国传统文化，尤其是儒家文化。为了使西方人从根本上理解儒家文化的精神，改变西方对中国文化的偏见，他将《论语》、《中庸》、《大学》等儒家经典译为英语，成为中国翻译史上英译儒经的第一人。其杰出的英语能力使他的译本在西方广为流行，为传播儒家文化，促进中西文明间的交流做出了不可磨灭的贡献，但是，由于历史的原因，辜鸿铭的儒经英译一直受到学者的冷遇。近二十年来，随着当代西方翻译理论在国内的不断引进和推广，辜鸿铭的儒经英译开始受到翻译研究者的青睐。他们借鉴西方翻译研究的多重视角，客观而系统地描述了辜鸿铭的儒经英译活动，业已取得可观的研究成果，但随着翻译理论的发展，该研究仍有待完善之处。 在翻译研究的文化转向之后，译者研究日益发展。胡庚申的《翻译适应选择论》是一部以译者为中心的专著。它的核心理念是：翻译即适应与选择，适应与选择都是由译者来完成的，译者是翻译过程的主导。这种以译者为中心的翻译观从适应与选择的视角对翻译过程、翻译原则、翻译方法以及译评标准等做出了新的解释。 本文从适应与选择的视角探讨了辜鸿铭儒经英译中为适应翻译生态环境所做的多维度的适应与选择，以期为当下之典籍英译提供借鉴。关于译者适应，本文认为辜鸿铭的双语、双文化能力和其自身的意识形态适应儒经英译的翻译生态环境，并从译者的早期生活经历，教育背景和文化态度等方面分析其独特意识形态的成因。关于译者选择，本文认为其在宏观层面上选择了归化策略并指出选择归化是适应儒经英译的翻译生态环境的结果，继而在微观层面上，从语言、文化、交际三维具体分析了其所做出的适应性选择。 结论指出，翻译不是单纯的语言活动，而是与其周围各种因素密切相关的一种自然生态活动。翻译过程中的种种选择必须能够适应相应的翻译生态环境。翻译适应选择论为研究辜鸿铭儒经英译开辟了一条新途径，同时也为翻译批评提供了新视角。
