Geographic Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence Integration in Transportation: An Overview

Geographic Information Systems (GIS's) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration offers tremendous advantage for solving complex transportation problems. In our previous works we have shown the benefits of GIS and Genetic Algorithms integration in highway alignment optimization. Here we provide an overview of a number of complex transportation problems that can benefit from such integration. The GIS-AI integration is discussed in solving the following four transportation problems: highway alignment optimization, snow route optimization, aircraft maintenance scheduling, and infrastructure management We extensively discuss the highway alignment optimization problem and introduce the ant algorithm for solving it.
