The use and interpretation of cooling curves has increased dramatically in recent years as a means of understanding and controlling the metallurgical properties of grey and ductile iron. In 2002, A&S embarked upon a technical project to build a clear picture of the effect of various raw materials in the melting process. This was initiated with the acquisition of 2 portable thermal analysis units, which have since been used extensively in foundries around the world. This paper will cover the following areas. 1. An overview of traditional metallurgical control in iron foundries 2. An introduction to thermal analysis 3. Understanding the most important elements of the cooling curve 4. Controlling the base iron properties. 5. Selecting suitable inoculation and nodularisation materials.
