A new technique to thermally fractionate polymers using DSC has been recently developed in our laboratory. This procedure allows melt/melt and melt/solid segregation to occur during thermal cycles that promote self-nucleation, crystallization and annealing processes (Successive Self-Nucleation/Annealing, SSA). For ethylene/α-olefin copolymers, the SSA technique can give qualitative information on the distribution of short chain branching and lamellar thickness. The technique can also be used to characterize any polymer that is able to experience molecular segregation during crystallization.
