EDF created the Petit Saut Scientific Committee within the frame of policy of transparency and to best answer the legitimate questions relating to thsf impact of the Petit Saut dam on the forest and river ecosystems (the creation off a reservoir covering 360 km~2 of uncleared rainforest) and to the methods used to minimise this impact. The Committee played the important role of stimulating exchanges and ideas with the scientific community and also helped and advised EDF regarding its choices. It participated in the necessary communication with the local population. This program, adapted to the different participants in the project, contributed to the successful construction of the scheme and then to plant operation integrating the environmental constraints. A specific organisation was set up to manage environmental and social issues during the 3 year construction period of the Nam Leuk Hydropower Project, located in Lao PDR in the centre of a National Park. During these 3 years, it proved its efficiency through the implementation of several innovative studies and research programs (particularly in the field of vegetation biomass), as well as through the implementation of social policies, which were especially appreciated by the population.
