In placing the SiC detectors within the reactor, there isrna conflict between achieving a high count rate, which isrnnecessary to generate a scram in an appropriately small timernwith high confidence, and degrading the detector as arnconsequence of radiation damage. In order to predict therndetector count rate and to quantify the radiation exposure inrnterms that are technically relevant to the observed radiationrneffect, we have calculated the neutron and gamma-ray radialrnflux distributions in the downcomer region resulting fromrnfission events within the IRIS core.
