Commercial pure titanium (CP Ti) is used in dental implants because of its chemical stability and biocompatibility, which are attributed to a surface layer of titanium oxide. Several mechanical and chemical treatments have been proposed to increase this biocompatibility. One possibility is to increase the surface roughness and the thickness of the titanium oxide layer. In the present work, Ti specimens were prepared using micro-arc oxidation in the galvanostatic mode. A positive voltage was applied to a CP Ti sample immersed in a Ca-containing mixed electrolyte and anodic oxidation of Ti occurred to form a thick oxide layer. The morphology of the titanium oxide layer was analyzed in disc specimens. Dental implants were used to evaluate the osseointegration properties in vivo tests. Dental implants were placed in the tibia of rabbits. The results showed that the oxidized surface layer had a beneficial effect on the implant biocompatibility.
