The issues of low coulombic efficiency and capacity fading encountered in the development of high voltage spinel LiMn_(1.5)Ni_(0.5)O_4 (LNMO) and lithium cobalt phosphate LiCoPO_4 (LCP) were reviewed. The developments in the area of electrolytes including the use of additives and fluorinated solvents for improved electrolyte stability and the area of LNMO and LCP cathodes themselves using substitution for stabilizing the cathodes were also reviewed. The advancement of high voltage Li-ion batteries will need to couple the improvement of high voltage cathode materials and electrolytes together for optimum performance.
